Step 1- Science

Fourth Class : Investigating Slopes

We in Fourth Class decided to investigate slopes. We asked our caretaker to cut a tube in half that we got from Recreate . We used Math's books as a measurement for the slope. We used 3, 5, 8, 12,15 and 20 books. We let the toy car go at the top of the slope.

We measured how far the car travelled in cm using metre sticks.

We recorded our findings on the table below.

We came up with the conclusion that the higher the slope ( the more Math's books we used) the further the car went.

We drew bar charts to represent our findings.

Fourth Class: Investigating balancing points

We carried out an investigation into Balancing Points. We first had to colour our clown template.

We then had to cut the clown out very carefully using a scissors.

We attached two coins of equal size and weight to the clowns hands and look how well they balanced on our fingers! We found that the correct balancing point was the clown's nose

Fifth Class: Making Bird Feeders

Mr Breathnach's class made some bird feeders. They used recycled bottles from REcreate.

"We  had to carefully pierce a hole in either side of the bottle. We then had to feed the straw through ( that was the tricky part!) we then had to make a larger hole so the birds could get at the feed.We filled our feeder with bird seed. Attached the lid and then used string to hang the feeder from a tree"

Step 2 - Technology

Technology

In our school we love to use Technology! We have a computer room with over 30 computers.

We use  computers to research  projects, we often create projects using Microsoft Powerpoint.

We all have a class blog linked to our school website. Some of the children love editing and writing pieces for the blog!

We use Ipads to take pictures of our work and events and upload them to the website so we can share them with our parents.

We are all so lucky to have an interactive whiteboard in every class which we love playing games on!

Some of the children use I pads and Laptops to complete their work.

We practice our Maths on Sumdog and our literacy on Nessy.

Step 3 - Engineering

ENGINEERING

We held our first Engineering Week this year from March 4th - 8th.

On Monday we held a screening of Dream Big : An Engineering World in the library. We all really enjoyed it and learnt loads of information about engineering.

We completed the Engineering Personality Test and graphed the results of our class.

Ms O'Hanlon distributed different activities throughout the week.

Paper Cup Challenge: We had to build the biggest tower possible!

Spaghetti Bridges: We had to design and construct a bridge using spaghetti and elastic bands.

They were very messy but lots of fun!

Moon Landing Challenge: We had to make alterations to our spaceship ( cup) so that our astronaut ( marshmallow) could land safely on the moon.

On Thursday we had an engineering workshop from Learn It.

We made catapults with Rob and Niamh.

We all loved Engineers Week and look forward to it again next year!
